Sentence parsing is the task of analyzing a sentence and its structure according to a specific representation. The representations provided by syntactic parsers mainly portray the grammatical relations of language and only indirectly reflect semantic distinctions. Whereas semantic annotations aim to reflect the meaning of sentences.
Semantic representations are getting more and more attention in natural language processing, but only a little progress has been made to estimate how effective they can be on downstream tasks. We provide a brief overview of the state of the art in semantic annotations and also assess the competency of our favourite semantic representation, the Universal Conceptual Cognitive Annotation on a downstream application.
