Traveling to SSIP 2001

Since SSIP 2001 participants are expected from several countries, they are probably to arrive by different means of transportation to Hungary and to Szeged. Here are some guidance to as how to approach your final destination, that is, Szeged, the University buildings and the dormitory. Should you need any further assistance, please contact the organizers via email at ssip@inf.u-szeged.hu.

Arriving in Budapest by plain

Fly to Ferihegy International Airport in Budapest (BUD). You can rent a car at the airport and drive directly to Szeged. (See driving instructions below.) or get into the city by some means of local transportation and take a train or bus from there. (See below.)

Getting into Budapest

The local bus service "Reptér-busz" runs between Ferihegy 2 and the Underground terminus Kõbánya-Kispest. From the terminus, take the M3 metro line to Nyugati Station. For these buses and the metro you need BKV pre-purchased ticket (HUF 100/single ticket).

Air Traffic and Airport Administration (LRI) operates city minibus service from and to Ferihegy Airport for HUF 1800/person/trip. Buy your ticket in the transit hall or at the LRI Airport Passanger Service desk located in the main passanger hall.

You may also take a taxi at the airport, however, it is quite expensive compared to the other opportunities.

From Budapest to Szeged

Szeged is served by trains from the Nyugati Station. The station can be reached by metro (M3). You are advised to take Intercity trains when available, as these are more convenient and faster. There are also bus routes to Szeged served from Népstadion station. The bus terminal is also on metro route (M2).

By train

Szeged can be reached by frequent trains from the Nyugati Station in Budapest. Please check the timetable. One way tickets cost HUF 1482 (2nd class), HUF 2223 (1st class), and HUF 360 extra for InterCity trains.

By bus

Szeged can also be reached by bus routes from the Népstadion Station in Budapest. Please check the timetable. Tickets cost about HUF 2000, one way.

By car

Follow freeway M5 (E75) from Budapest to Kiskunfélegyháza (toll road), and continue on highway 5 (E75) to Szeged.

Local transportation in Szeged

In geneal, you probably do not need to use any local transportation while attending the Summer School, since everything you may want to reach in the town (dormitory, lecture hall, computer labs, downtown) is in a walking distance. However, if you need to get somewhere and do not feel like walking there, there are three tram lines (1, 3, 4), trolley lines (5, 8, 9), and several bus lines with frequent stops and change locations to get you basically anywhere in town. To ride on any of these vehicles you need a valid pass. Single tickets (HUF 85), daily tickets (HUF 306), weekly tickets (HUF 924) can be purchased at kiosks near major stops and change points. Single tickets can also be purchased at the driver for HUF 112.

From the dormitory to the lecture hall

The dormitory is just a walk distance from the University buildings where the daily activities will take place. For your convenience, at least on the first morning, local personnel will walk you from the dormitory to the lecture hall.

Maps

Please find maps of the city here.

Currency

The local currency in Hungary is Hungarian Forint (HUF). For current exchange rates please visit The Universal Currency Converter Services.

There are several ATM machines in downtown Szeged where you can withdraw cash from your VISA/MasterCard, and many bank branches where you can cash travellers checks. You may also use your VISA/MasterCard for purchase at several shops and supermarkets.

Special assistance

If you need special assistance, please notify the organizers as soon as you know your itinerary. We will try to assist participants arriving at the Szeged railway station.
